Research Assistant or Research Associate in Automotive Engines - Fixed Term Contract (CT6400R)

The Institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) at the University of Bath is recruiting a Research Assistant/Research Associate to undertake research work for the APC Dynamic Analysis Modelling and Optimisation of GDI Engines (Dynamo) project.

The Dynamo project aims firstly to create novel experimental techniques to measure data that can improve the accuracy of dynamic models of each of the major sub-systems of an advanced gasoline engine. Secondly, it aims to use these dynamic models to provide a method for optimising the layout of the engine architecture. The Research Associate will be expected to directly assist in the delivery of the project work packages.

The Dynamo project team consists of three universities and three industrial partner, and if being directed by the Ford Motor Company. The Bath team includes eight researchers and academics.

IAAPS is a leading centre for theoretical, experimental and analytical research into powertrain systems in the UK. IAAPS has an excellent track record in delivering industry-relevant projects, and has long established collaborations with industrial partners. The Centre considers its remit to be all of the links in the chain from energy storage to its conversion into mechanical work on board a vehicle. The recently secured £49m investment will propel IAAPS into a global leading position.

Applicants should possess a suitable degree in subject area of direct relevance for the project and have research experience. Applicants must have experience of creating dynamic models of gasoline engine and designing test stands for thermal testing of engine friction and emission formation, data development of engine hardware and engine design. Experience of delivery and involvement in major collaborative research programmes such as Innovate UK or APC consortia would also be highly beneficial. Candidates should be self-motivated and possess project management and technical communication skills.

This position is full time (36.5 hours per week) and is being offered on a fixed term contract basis with an expected expiry date of 31 October 2020.
