The opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to join the research team in the Precision Imaging Beacon of Excellence, which is driving the discovery and translation of new imaging tools which will transform non-invasive diagnosis, improve the outcomes for patients, and allow better evaluation of the success of medical interventions.

Our prestigious internal fellowship schemes are a fundamental part of the University of Nottingham’s Research Vision and support its aim to recruit the next generation of outstanding research leaders. We will be recruiting a diverse cohort of 100 Nottingham and Anne McLaren Research Fellows by the end of 2022, and as part of this we are particularly interested to recruit outstanding candidates to the Precision Imaging Beacon. Beacon fellows will be supported to develop an independent research career, whilst actively contributing to the aims of the Beacon Research Programme and are expected to become active members of the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre (SPMIC).

We support applicants with diverse career paths and backgrounds and also welcome applications from those wishing to work part-time in order to combine the fellowship with personal responsibilities.

Strategic areas

We are inviting applications in the following areas:

Clinical Academics

Radiology (esp. Precision Radiology, Radiomics, Evidence based Radiology in any subspeciality)Imaging specialist (MRI) in Mental Health, Neurosciences, Oncology, Musculo-skeletal, Gastro-intestinal or Respiratory disorders

Scientists

Mathematical NeuroscienceComputational Imaging - AIUndersampled MRI Next generation biomedical imaging systems (MEG, UHF-MRI)Innovative neuromodulation therapies Preclinical translational Imaging

A Precision Imaging Fellowship can be held as a Nottingham Research Fellowship (aimed at exceptional postdoctoral researchers in all academic disciplines represented at the University) or as an Anne McLaren Fellowship (aimed at outstanding female scholars in science, technology, engineering and medicine at the early stage of their academic careers).

Each fellowship offers:

Three years independent funding, (nominal start date October 2019), to conduct research while based at the University of Nottingham.Extensive career development support, including participation in a mentoring scheme Competitive salary set on the Clinical Academic Salary Scale or Research and Teaching Staff Scales Level 5The linking of the Fellowship to an established academic post for scientistsResearch expenses totalling £75,000. Additional childcare costs of up to £5,000 per annum Relocation expenses of up to £1,500 The opportunity to spend periods of time at University of Nottingham Campuses in China and Malaysia.

Eligibility: Candidates must have been awarded their PhD. This scheme is aimed at early career researchers, and candidates do not normally have more than 8 year’s postdoctoral experience. However, there are no eligibility rules based on years of post-doctoral experience as this doesn’t allow for variations of career paths across disciplines. Candidates will be assessed on their quality, potential and track record, relative to their career stage.

Clinical appointments

Please note that clinical appointments are welcomed. Clinical Academics are encouraged to apply to the Nottingham Research Fellowships, and there is a recognition that for this staff group there are very specific challenges, namely that career progression is linked to professional accreditation as a Consultant and the co-funding of any post with the NHS Trust.  We will work with you to identify an appropriate allocation of clinical and fellowship time to support your career and research progression. Please note that, while the School of Medicine plans to support successful Clinical Fellows strongly at the conclusion of their Fellowship, it is not able to guarantee a permanent position following the Fellowship as this is dependent on NHS trust funding.

How to apply:

Apply online, completing the short form and uploading your completed full application form, downloadable below.

Please note, uploading the full application form is a requirement and we will not be able to consider your application if this is not provided. You must discuss your research proposal with the beacon team before submitting your application.

Guidance notes on completing the application form are available below.
