Fixed term appointments from 1st September 2019, for up to 1 year.

We are seeking to appoint two Research Fellows for a collaborative project funded by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL). The aim of the project is to develop a Gait biometric system where recordings have been taken place in challenging outdoor settings.

The project will combine important areas of technology to address the challenge of identifying/recognising people from the video of their gait recorded by infrared cameras by using Computer Vision and Machine Learning techniques.

Essential requirements:

A PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience) in an area pertinent to the subject area, i.e. Computing or Engineering.*A strong computing or engineering background.Proven track record and knowledge of some of the following areas: Biometric, Computer vision, Machine learning, and Image Processing.Practical experience within a research environment and/or publication in relevant and refereed journals.Excellent programming skills (C++,OpenCV, python).Excellent oral and written communication skills.Ability to organise your work and prioritise work to meet deadlines.

You will be part of the biometric group within the Vision, Learning and Control (VLC) group based in the School of Electronic and Computer Science (ECS) at the Highfield Campus in the University of Southampton. For further information about the VLC group see https://www.vlc.ecs.soton.ac.uk/ . The Group is a part of the School of Electronic and Computer Science, University of Southampton, which is a leading department of Electronic and Computer Science among UK Universities. The biometric group in ECS has an international reputation and is one of the leading groups in the field of biometric worldwide.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
