Description :

Research Fellow position with the Soft Photonics Systems Group, University of Southampton

Modelling Photoactive Liquid Crystal

Project description

Soft Photonics Systems Group designed and built an instrument, the Optical Multi-Parameter Analyser (OMPA), that measures the properties of nematic liquid crystals (https://sps.soton.ac.uk/).  The associated software, written in Matlab, acquires the data and processes it to extract cell and liquid crystal optical and physical properties. The aim of this project is to extend this software to model electrical, anchoring, pre-tilt and alignment properties of photoactive liquid crystal cells.

It is expected that successful completion of these tasks will lead to one or more papers in liquid crystal and photonics journals.

Job requirements

We require a candidate with good coding ability and experience in writing computer programs to solve ordinary differential equations, performing non-linear parameter fitting and modelling liquid crystals.  The suite of codes developed by the Soft Photonics Systems group are written in Matlab and all the codes developed in this project must also be written in this programming language.  Therefore, a good knowledge of Matlab is preferred, but in depth knowledge of Python or a similar programming language is also fine, provided that the candidate is willing to quickly learn Matlab.

You will have a PhD or equivalent/equivalent professional qualification and experience in Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline.

Funding and duration/arrangements

Funding is for up to 9 months and only until 31 December 2019.  The project might be extended for another 3 months.Flexible working arrangements are possible.Support, guidance and training will be provided by the academic and research staff from Soft Photonics Systems team. The position is available now with starting date as soon as possible.
