Do you have experience in the development of cementitious and/or lime based materials for the built environment?

The University of Bath in partnership with Alive Labs is looking for a highly motivated and organized Research Associate with a background in science and/or engineering and ideally be perusing research at PhD level or above. 

The aim of this Accelerated Knowledge Transfer (AKT) is to help optimise Alive Labs’s innovative, carbon-negative and bioreceptive cementitious mix for use in biophilic cladding solutions. Innovation will be introduced via the novel use of naturally occurring substances (biobased additives and aggregates) which provide the required properties whilst also lowering the embodied carbon of the final cladding product.

This is a 0.25 FTE part-time fixed-term role, due to funding requirements it must end by 31st July 2024.

We are seeking a talented researcher with the skills to carry out laboratory-based research, and analyse and interpret mechanical, physical and chemical data.  The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills and be experienced in the preparation of scientific reports, papers and publications.

This project will bring together an exciting combination of expertise in materials characterisation and analysis working alongside academics from one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities. This is a unique opportunity to lead an important project which will promote sustainability and health and wellbeing to the built environment. 

Whilst working on this project as an Accelerated KT Associate, you will broaden your knowledge and expertise within an industrially relevant project and be supported by both industrial and academic supervisors. 

You will be responsible for engaging with and embedding new knowledge within both the business partner and the University.

Alive Labs is an innovator in the field of Architecture and Design with a mission to make our cities greener. Leaders in their respected fields of Architecture & Bryology the cross disciplinary management team is further supported by a studio make-up of physicists, biologists and artists.  

Alive labs operates from a studio in Hackney Wick, London, and is responsible for the creation of ‘Terranite’ a carbon negative, bioreceptive cementitious mix that passively restores nature to the urban environment. We are working closely with our academic partners to further develop and test our innovation and have a number of live pilot trials being deployed. We have partnerships across three Universities including; the University of Bath, University of Edinburgh and UCL and are at the forefront of Sustainable Innovation in the Built Environment. The ideal candidate will have:

Knowledge and practical experience in the application of physical, chemical, and mechanical testing, and characterization techniques would be preferable, however training will be given to the Associate as required;Experience in the development of cementitious and/or lime based materials for the built environment;Strong problem-solving skills;Good communication and organisation skills. The Associate will have a key role in coordinating with the stakeholders involved in this project;Experience working in a team with both academic and industry based partners.

Depending on the start date, the part time hours offered for this role may be slighter higher than 0.25 FTE, this can be discussed during the interview.
