Description :

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate / Fellow to conduct a programme of research on using flat optical fibre sensors to monitor reinforced concrete structures.  This work is part of FOSSIC, an EPSRC funded project to develop novel flat optical fibre sensors for application in process control, evaluation and health monitoring of high value composite assets.

The post will be based in the Faculty of Engineering on the University of Nottingham’s University Park campus.  The successful candidate will also collaborate with research partners at the Universities of Southampton, Bristol, Warwick, Hertfordshire and Wrexham.  Our work package is laboratory based and consists of embedding the novel sensors within CFRP laminates used to strengthen concrete specimens.  The novel sensors will be used to monitor strains during temperature-controlled curing and load testing to determine capacity and failure modes.

Candidates must have a PhD awarded or submitted in Civil Engineering or the application of optical sensors. The successful candidate will be required to work flexibily in order to meet the demands of the project.

This job is full time and is available from April 1 2026 and is fixed-term until 31 March 2027.
