Description :

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in the area of experimental antiferromagnetic spintronics. The position will involve planning and direct involvement in experimental studies of antiferromagnetic materials and devices and helping and directing PhD students within the project.

This post is funded by a new EU 2020 FET OPEN project which aims to develop the understanding of electrically-induced switching of antiferromagnetic order, and pave the way to its exploitation in future memory technologies. The project involves a close collaboration between the Nottingham spintronics group, the project leaders at the Institute of Physics, Prague and several other leading European groups. The project is based on our recent demonstration (P Wadley et al.Science 351, 587 (2016).) of the switching and reading of the antiferromagnetic moment orientation using electric currents in our newly developed antiferromagnetic material, tetragonal CuMnAs (P Wadley et al.Nature Commun. 4, 2322 (2013)). The work of the collaborating partners has initiated a radical new approach to spintronics: using antiferromagnets as the active elements. Antiferromagnetic materials offer several key advantages for spintronic applications including magnetization switching with a timescale of a few ps. The project involves antiferromagnetic materials development, device design and fabrication, magneto-transport studies, synchrotron based dichroism studies.

The role will be to have specific responsibility for research, for developing research objectives and proposals in antiferromagnetic spintronics. The post holder will be expected to plan and carry out experimental research on the magnetic and magneto-transport properties of functional antiferromagnets, and to be involved in the development of antiferromagnetic materials. The role holder will have the opportunity to use their initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, develop research methods and extend their research portfolio.

This position is based on a full time, fixed-term contract for a period of two years.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof Bryan Gallagher, email: bryan.gallagher@nottingham.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
