Description :

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in Neuroscience and extracellular matrix? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

The perineuronal net (PNN) is an extracellular structure which wraps around the surface of neurons. Holes in the PNN correspond to the places where neuronal connections are made and are believed to hold the information of memory. In this project, we shall investigate the mechanism of hole formation in the PNN. The project is multidisciplinary and combines areas of neurosciences, extracellular matrix biology and biophysics.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong interest in neuronal plasticity to work on a project co-supervised by Dr Jessica Kwok (on extracellular matrix and neurosciences) and Dr Ralf Richter (on extracellular matrix and biophysics). You should have (or be close to completing) a PhD in neurosciences, biochemistry or biophysics. Strong experience in extracellular matrix biology, cell culture, protein expression and neuroscience, together with surface plasmon resonance and quartz crystal microbalance, is desirable.

The University of Leeds and the Faculty of Biological Sciences are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and offer a range of family friendly policies. The University is a charter member of Athena SWAN (the national body that promotes gender equality in higher education), and the Faculty of Biological Sciences was reawarded a Bronze award in 2017.  We are proud to be an inclusive Faculty that values all staff, and are happy to consider job share applications and requests for flexible working arrangements from our employees.
