The successful candidate will work at the design, prototype development, testing and engineering of high-voltage (> 1.5 kV) high power (> 20 kW) bi-directional dc-ac converter topologies and relative controllers, intended primarily for use on-board transport applications. Novel high-voltage wide-band-gap semiconductor technology (silicon carbide, SiC) will be used to develop solutions which greatly advance the state-of-the-art in efficiency and power density; the magnetic components and controllers design and realization will need to be compatible with the high switching frequency operation of the power cell. She/he will have a leading and independent role in setting up the test benches required for experimental validation, as well as in the active participation in project meetings and technical reporting. The activity is likely to generate high impact research outputs, which the researcher is expected to disseminate with publications in major international specialist journals and presentations at selected international specialist conferences. Support with teaching duties and student supervision also pertain to the remit of the role. Availability for occasional international travel is necessary.

The requested skills and competences are: PhD in power electronics (or being very close to get one); solid experience with common design tools of power electronics, including the design of high frequency magnetic components and FPGA-based control boards; experience and ability to work alone in the lab conducting tests on high voltage semiconductor devices and high-voltage high power dc-ac converters; hands-on knowledge of multi-level inverter topologies and wide-band-gap semiconductors use; good communication and reporting skills and previous experience of participating in international projects and disseminating results at international conferences and workshops. 

This position is offered on a Fixed-term contract until 30 October 2020. Hours of work will be full-time (36.25 per week). Job share arrangements may be considered.
