Description :

The Institute for Mathematical Innovation (IMI) at the University of Bath invites applications from excellent candidates for a position to sustain and extend its position of national leadership in interdisciplinary and industrial applications of the mathematical sciences.

IMI is looking to recruit a Commercial Research Associate (CRA) to join our enthusiastic team and take on high impact, short-term projects working with industry and collaborating with a wide range of academic staff around the university. CRAs should possess mathematical flexibility and confidence owing to the variety of work inherent in the role.

We specifically encourage applications from candidates with skills and experience in applied statistics or data science who can apply their skills to projects from a variety of different areas. We will also consider excellent candidates with experience, versatility and problem solving skills across the mathematical sciences.

CRAs are instrumental in delivering Knowledge Exchange (KE) in the mathematical sciences. Past projects include estimation of risk for the insurance industry, interpretation of physiological data for growth and maturation in adolescents, models of crop growth variability due to climate, analysing the effect of imposing a land value tax in London, and modelling snack food production. These projects have involved working with academic staff from the Departments of Mathematical Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, and Health, through to Social and Policy Sciences, and Bath’s Institute for Policy Research.

IMI is recognised for its development of new models for Knowledge Exchange (KE) for the mathematical sciences by the EPSRC / KTN Independent Review of KE in the Mathematical Sciences, chaired by Philip Bond and published in April 2018.

There are close links between IMI and the Department of Mathematical Sciences which has over 70 academic staff from all areas of Mathematics, including around a dozen working in statistics. The department has a strong culture of collaboration across research areas, reinforced by our EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics at Bath (SAMBa) which trains cohorts of 10-15 PhD students per year.

This post is full-time (36.5 hours per week) and is offered on a maternity cover basis with an anticipated end date of October 2020.

The IMI and the University are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment.

Alongside completion of the online application form, it is essential that candidates upload:

Full Curriculum VitaeStatement of research expertise and their experience working with external partners.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Caroline Ang, the IMI Manager (c.w.ang@bath.ac.uk or 01225 383404).

Closing Date: 24 Feb 2020
Type: Education & Research
