Description :

Applications are invited for a research fellow to lead experimental research activities in the area of composite materials recycling within the Composite Materials Research Group at the University of Nottingham.

The University of Nottingham Composites Research Group has worked for over 25 years on composites science and manufacturing, including pioneering work on out-of-autoclave processing, automated reinforcement deposition, process modelling and recycling. The Group has published over 500 papers and generated research income of £16.7M, with a strong level of industrial engagement. The Group also leads the EPSRC Future Composites Manufacturing Research Hub, a £10.3m investment into developing composites manufacturing in the UK.

The Composites Research Group also has an internationally leading track record in the area of thermoset polymer composite materials recycling, where extensive research has been undertaken on fibre recovery from waste composites and high value applications for recovered fibre.  Current research includes the development of alignment techniques to produce discontinuous fibre tapes from recovered carbon fibre that would be suitable for the manufacture of high volume fraction polymer composites suitable for high grade applications.

The successful candidate will use existing experimental facilities for the manufacture of tapes of aligned fibre from discontinuous recovered carbon fibre to develop product forms suitable for moulding into high value composite materials.  The work will also involve developing the experimental test facilities and experience in engineering design is required.  Experience in developing control systems for test rigs and the manufacture and commissioning of experimental facilities is desirable.

Candidates must hold a Degree, or equivalent in a relevant area and a PhD or equivalent (or shortly due to complete) in mechanical or materials engineering or a related subject area. Key to the success of the application will be the ability of the applicant to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team.

This full-time post (36.25 hours per week) is available immediately and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 8 months. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Tom Turner: Thomas.turner@nottingham.ac.uk
Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
