Marie Sklowdowska-Curie Fellows ITN (1233020WF)

The role

The Astronomy Group has three Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow ITN roles available to develop cosmological models of galaxy and supermassive black hole evolution. You will work under the supervision of Dr Francesco Shankar to unveil the origin of the morphological diversity of galaxies, their evolutionary patterns, and their still mysterious connection to their central supermassive black holes.

The successful applicant must have a BSc, MSc or equivalent professional qualifications.

The fellows will contribute to the next-generation European space galaxy missions Euclid, LSST, SKA and Athena.

The positions are funded by the H2020 ITN-ETN project “Big Data Applications for Black Hole Evolution Studies” (BiD4BEST). These fixed-term positions are available for up to 36 months from 1st October 2020.

Eligibility criteria and application

As a primary objective of the EID program is international mobility, transnational mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) is a requirement for the researcher when taking up the appointment.

At the time of recruitment (i.e. first date of employment), you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc…) in the UK for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to recruitment under this project. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.

At the time of recruitment, you must not yet have been awarded your doctorate and must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of your research career.

About BiD4BEST

The network has a total of 13 positions available and we encourage eligible candidates to consider applying to any of our openings. BiD4BEST will launch in March 2020 and represents a coordinated research training effort to mobilise the community in Europe and prepare a core group of young scientists in anticipation of new observational data in the early/mid 2020s, from future space missions with strong European involvement

BiD4BEST will incorporate 20 international project partners across four years of research, bring together leading scientists in observational and theoretical studies of black holes and galaxies, industrial experts in cutting-edge big-data technologies, and professionals in science dissemination. Academic partners in the research network include some of Europe’s most prestigious universities, with EU contributions benefiting 10 institutions across the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece and the Netherlands. Industrial partners range from the start-ups, to medium and large companies such as chemicals giant BASF.
