Description :

Veterinary Clinical Teaching Fellow

Here at the School of Veterinary Medicine, we have successfully established a high quality network of clinical practices to deliver a fully distributed model of work-place based clinical education.  By extensively partnering with the profession, we have developed an authentic, relevant and student-centred approach to clinical veterinary education.

Integral to this model are the Veterinary Clinical Teaching Fellows (VCTFs), our team of clinical tutors who provide oversight of individual development and evaluation of final year students toward attainment of day-one competences and support practice-based trained clinical mentors in the delivery of our IMR module.  This is achieved through regular and frequent practice visits to meet with clinical mentors and through the provision of one-to-one feedback and coaching of students.  As well as overseeing the successful development of the students’ portfolio, the VCTF team also play a key role in the assessment of final year students, and act to remediate where necessary.

The VCTFs act as key university liaisons for the partner practices, and will be expected to develop strong working relationships with practice staff.  They provide pedagogical training of clinical mentors and contribute to the quality assurance of IMR delivery. The VCTFs are also personal tutors for students in 4th and 5th year of the curriculum, providing an important role in pastoral care of the students as they transition through the clinical years.

Due to scale-up in student number, we are now recruiting for an additional VCTF position.  The successful appointee will be a UK registered (or eligible to register) veterinary surgeon and will have experience in general clinical practice (small animal, equine, production animal or mixed practice).  These roles support flexible working, and include generous holiday allowance.

Candidates will have a flair for communicating with both undergraduates and practitioners and a passion for veterinary clinical education.  Clinical coaching or academic experience is desirable but not essential for these roles as comprehensive educational training is provided during the induction process (including completion of graduate certificate in higher education).

Interviews will be held on 8/9/10th June 2020.

Informal enquiries are invited and should be directed to Mike Cathcart (m.cathcart@surrey.ac.uk)
