CDT Sustainable Hydrogen

The Universities of Nottingham, Loughborough, Birmingham and Ulster have joined forces to become a national CDT in Sustainable Hydrogen. The CDT is collaborating with over 40 companies and organisations to provide a new integrated PhD experience. The CDT offers a training programme which supports the cohort throughout their PhD journey providing the multidisciplinary training you’d expect, but also developing entrepreneurial, project and management skills along with the skills needed to communicate your ideas to a wide range of audiences. Project specification

Decades of research have been devoted to storing hydrogen more economically and efficiently, and solid-state stores based on hydrides of metal alloys, such as intermetallics and high-entropy alloys, are one of the most extensively studied materials. A wide range of exciting potential applications are available, from hydrogen storage for transportation, stationary applications for refuelling and energy storage, to hydrogen compressors and thermal energy storage. Their practical applicability varies widely as a function of their thermodynamic properties which, when combined with other factors such as sustainability, cost, kinetics, capacity, has led to thousands of metal hydrides being investigated experimentally. Working together with an in-house modelling group, who will run computational high-throughput screening of materials databases and identify new candidate metal alloys with favourable properties for the aforementioned applications, this project aims to experimentally synthesize novel metal alloys shortlisted by computational screening, and characterise their structures and hydrogen absorption/desorption properties. This project forms part of our ongoing collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories on a joint experimental/computational project to identify new metal alloys for hydrogen storage and related applications. The project will also expose the candidate to LCM Ltd a leading manufacturer and supplier of complex metal alloys. 

This project will be supervised by Professor David Grant, Professor Gavin Walker and Dr. Sanliang Ling, from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham. 

Funding

The CDT studentship covers UK/EU tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend of £16,909 per annum. The studentship eligibility criteria are defined by the EPSRC. Funding is provided to cover travel and subsistence costs related to the CDT training and research activities and an Equality and Diversity discretionary fund provides additional support where needed to ensure all students within the cohort have access to similar opportunities.

Eligibility

Applicants should have or expect to obtain a first class or 2.1 honours degree or a MSc with distinction in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or a related discipline. Applications are encouraged from those with work experience in a related area that gives an equivalent level of training to that of a science/engineering graduate.
