Applications are invited to work on a PhD at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Nottingham, in the field of asphalt roads. We are looking to study the texture of asphalt, which is related to the maximum speed allowed in roads and the safety of drivers. 

In order to control the quality of a new asphalt road, we will measure the surface texture of the asphalt and, knowing its composition determine if the road has been well compacted or not.

The successful candidate will use laboratory testing and software to analyse the texture of asphalt and its relationship to its composition and compaction level.

Due to the nature of the project, the following skills would be desirable in the successful candidate:

* Creative problem solving.

* Good English level (IELTS above 6.5 will be required).

* Common sense and mathematical competence.

* Motivation and efficiency.

Candidates must hold a good honours degree or equivalent in a related topic or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience.

This is a 3-year programme. The start date is October 2020. The studentship includes fees and a tax-free stipend (currently at £15,285 p.a. tax free). Please note that due to funding restrictions, this position is available to UK/EU nationals only.
