Research Fellow in Environmental Economics (ENVEE1425)

From October 2020, Prof. Julia Martin-Ortega, Dr. Thijs Dekker and Dr. Martin Dallimer will lead the analysis of the socio-economic strand of the Horizon 2020 DRYvER project, which together with 25 European and international partners, will provide critical information for the design and implementation of innovative nature-based solutions to mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts on drying river networks. 

The aim of the DRYvER (Securing biodiversity, functional integrity and ecosystem services in DRYing riVER networks) is to collect, analyse and model data from nine case studies in Europe and South America to create a novel, global meta-system approach that incorporates hydrology, socio-economics, ecology and biogeochemistry. Central to that process is the economic valuation of ecosystem services provided by such critical ecosystems and for which we are looking for a research fellow with experience in multiple valuation techniques to join our team.

The work will involve, in principle, international travel to several of the following countries: France, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Finland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria and Brazil, in order to carry out fieldwork for the implementation of environmental valuation (with the support of local partners), as well as attend project meetings.

In all events, overseas stays are likely to last for less than 10 days. The frequency of international travel will depend on the development of the research process, but could include up to 2 visits per case study (to a maximum of 6 case studies) over the duration of the project, and one to two project meetings per year.

International travel is not planned for the first year of the project and, in any case, it will be adapted to the evolution of the COVID pandemic. Alternative delivery of research plans have been put in place in case the pandemic prevents international travel for the whole or most of the duration of the project so that the research for this post can still be delivered (e.g. video-conference project meetings, online stated preferences techniques implementation).
