Description :

Applications are invited for a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to support the Racing Foundation funded project: Analysis and Prevention of Spinal Injuries in Horse Racing.

The Analysis and Prevention of Spinal Injuries in Horse Racing is a research programme in collaboration with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and the British Racing School (BRS). Through experimental and computational methods, we aim to understand the mechanisms of spinal injury in horseracing. This key knowledge will be used to inform the design of interventions to minimise spinal injury occurrence. More specifically, we aim to identify optimal falling technique strategies, and inform the design of new protective garments.

The Research Associate will join a research team made up of biomechanists, epidemiologists, and medical doctors. The Research Associate will be expected to lead the creation of computational models and the implementation of a simulation framework. Excellent knowledge and experience in musculoskeletal and/or finite element modelling is therefore essential. Experience in non-linear programming and optimal control problem formulation is highly desired. From an experimental testing perspective, the Research Associate is expected to take the lead in the design and conduction of data collection sessions, data analysis, and data integration with the simulation framework.

The research associate will be reporting to the line manager and a steering group.

Line Manager: Dr Dario Cazzola, Senior Lecturer in Biomechanics

Steering Group: Prof Keith Stokes (Professor in Applied Physiology) Dr Jerry Hill (Chief Medical Advisor of the Horse Racing Authority), Dr Polly McGuigan (Senior Lecturer in Biomechanics)

Interviews will take place week commencing 27th September.

The applicant will join the Department for Health of the University of Bath on a fixed term basis of up to 24-months.
