Description :

You will be responsible for the development and application of primary research to examine the technology challenges for the coastal shipping of liquefied CO2 including both ship design and port transfer requirements.  We aim to develop a deep understanding of how a complete system can be designed to match supply and demand alongside deciding the design, size and number of ships necessary to achieve this.   The primary driver is the mismatch between where industrial CO2 is generated and where there is no available geostorage, such as the Solent or South Wales, to other regions with excess storage capacities.

This two-year project is part of the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC).  IDRIC will work closely with the UK’s major industrial clusters to address the challenges of industrial decarbonisation. IDRIC is a diverse community of more than 140 partners, including the University of Southampton, brought together to create the world’s first net-zero emissions industrial cluster by 2040 and four low-carbon clusters by 2030.

This post is offered on a full-time, fixed term basis until 30/09/2023.

You will have:

A PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in maritime engineering/naval architecture or a related discipline as it relates to large ship design. An interest in industrial decarbonisation technologies particularly as they relate to transport and storage of liquefied CO2 or fuels such as LNG or H2.Expertise in critical literature review and use of databases to access open-source research.Proven ability to carry out high level systems analysis and modelling.Be a confident communicator who can deliver technical reports and liaise effectively with industry and academic partners.

The findings and methods developed are expected to be of sufficient scientific novelty and application that they will lead to publications in leading engineering journals. You will disseminate the research findings at project meetings, international conferences, industrial events and policy fora. As a researcher, you will be responsible for supporting general research activity at the University of Southampton and encouraging PhD, MSc and Undergraduate students in related research activity.

You should show strong motivation for independent research, with a publication track record to match.  Applicants should also be able to manage conflicting priorities and time constraints, possess good organisational and time management skills, pay close attention to detail, and have excellent interpersonal skills.
