Software Engineer: Research Application Support

The University of Southampton’s research is changing the world for the better by addressing some of the world's biggest challenges. The Research Application Support Team are responsible for the software and digital services that underpin the University’s world-leading researchers and scientists. We are looking for talented technical staff to join our software-development team to deliver a broad range of bespoke and off-the-shelf applications. Join us as we transition towards a DevOps delivery model using cloud-hosted solutions.

About the Role

We’re looking for candidates who understand the value of delivering well-architected and testable solutions. You will be working as part of an Agile development team committed to delivering high-quality results that enable the research activities of the university. What you’ll do

In support of the University’s research, you will:

Develop, deploy, and support bespoke software solutions.Source, install, and configure commercial off-the-shelf products.Collaborate with scientists and academics to design solutions for current research projects.Work in a team of DevOps engineers, creating automated deployment pipelines for our on-premise and cloud-based platforms.Manage the entire lifecycle of services from design to decommission.

We’re particularly looking to hear from candidates with any of the following experience:

Software development in an Agile environment, using languages such as C# or PHP.Modern development practices such as automated testing, design patterns, and SOLID principles.Experience working with Windows and Linux server environments.Experience of Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment tools, in particular Azure DevOps, TeamCity, or OctopusDeploy.Knowledge of cloud environments, in particular Microsoft Azure.Experience communicating with a wide variety of customers.
