Description :

We are seeking a Research fellow to work on an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Project to Investigate Liquid Air Energy Storage for Small Power Grids and Integrated Energy Systems.

This is an exciting opportunity to support a major new project aimed at researching a novel small scale liquid air energy storage concept.  The project, SUCCESS, is a 2-year EPSRC programme to investigate the potential to use liquid air energy storage at small scale to provide storage for power grid support, local liquefaction of bio-methane and densification via cold compression of locally produced hydrogen.  The project focuses on four themes: Economic modelling (to identify revenue potentials via the three product streams and inform technical requirements), Thermo-fluid simulation (to research novel cycle configurations), Product storage (to research novel solutions to the storage of cold, compressed cryogens that will be performed in collaboration with the University of Oxford) and Laboratory demonstration (to prove key concepts at lab scale).  The project is supported by several industrial partners working in liquid air storage and bio methane production.

You will play a central role in the project, carrying out both simulation and experimental work and supporting the team in delivery of all aspects of the research. Your role is also expected to be involved in the developing, planning and managing of the project in consultation with a Principal Investigator, alongside dissemination of the outputs of the work in journal papers and at conferences.  In order to be successful in this post you should have:

A good (1 or 2:1) degree, in mechanical engineering, physics or a related subjectA relevant postgraduate qualification/PhD (or close to completion), or an equivalent level of professional experienceAbility to analyse complex datasets and communicate conclusions clearlyA desire to gain experience cryogenic engineering and energy storageSufficient, up to date breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes and evidence of commitment to engage in continuous professional development

For full details of this post and person specification, please see the attached job description.  If you would like an informal conversation about the project or role, please email Prof. Robert Morgan at R.Morgan2@brighton.ac.uk
